Daily Update

Shabbat Nachamu on the Kollel is truly one of a kind. The emotions of Tisha B’Av flow into a Shabbat of energy and reflection. The zemirot are otherworldly, and the davening is intense and uplifting. This year, Shabbat Nachamu coincided with Rav Schachter’s last moments on the Kollel, lending even more significance to the day. The meals were enhanced by divrei torah from Reuven Isaacs and Sammy Schwartz. We hosted Mr. David Cutler (and family), and the Cutlers sponsored the Friday night oneg, in honor of all our NCSYers. David also addressed the Kollel on Shabbat morning, and his words were extremely well received. But the high points of Shabbat were the opportunities to hear from Rav Schachter.

He first spoke at the Oneg, describing the challenge of finding meaning in ritual, and avoiding rote or joyless observance. On Shabbat morning, he held a special question and answer session, dealing with a host of issues pre-submitted by the NCSYers. Topics covered included: copyright infringement,
aliyah, the recent protests in Yerushalayim, the legacy of Rav Soloveitchik zt”l, and many others. We also heard from Rav Kaminetsky at Seudat Shlishit, who spoke of the need to think out our actions and avoid mindlessly following our emotions and desires. After havdalah we danced Rav Schachter out of the Beit Medrash, always one of the most bittersweet moments of the summer.
